Elvis: Precious Memories
1996/10
Donna Presley's hardback book , "Elvis-Precious
Memories", is a three hundred page account of how the life of the
late Elvis Presley intertwined with many of his close relatives over a
period of more than four decades.
The photographs on the colourful dustcover of the book
portray Elvis in his four stages of developement, from a young boy
with his beloved mother Gladys, to the self assured teen idol, the
devastatingly handsome soldier on leave in Paris, to the later, much
loved, and self confident
entertainer.
The pages come alive as we are introduced once again
to very familiar names, so well known by Elvis fans from the millions
of words printed about him and his family, in literally hundreds of
books. (In fact I believe the number has now passed the thousand
mark!)
Here and there surprising facts surface as we learn in
intimate detail the goings on at Graceland, sometimes exciting
sometimes mundane for here we are mixing with a real family-a family
grown close in days of want, and now happy to share success. This book
is about the interaction of human beings in an extraordinary
environment, it speaks of love shared, the give and take of a family
unbowed by the poverty of Mississippi-the poorest of all the United
States.
A rags to riches story in Tennessee, about a young man
so filled with song something had to give, and give he did with a
vengeance! Donna's sincere account of the way Elvis handled his
amazing career and its effects on all close to him is a story we all
think we know till we hear it from the inside! Grandma Minnie, aunt
Nash, uncle Vester and Vernon Presley, along with Donna, Buddy, Susie,
and many many more feature in the unique collection of family
photographs distributed throughout the book-a number of which have
never been published before!
Many books about the life of Elvis Presley fall far
short of their subject, but here we have in Donna's fascinating book
many clues to the enigma that was Elvis, many more books are sure to
follow, nevertheless, "Elvis-Precious Memories", will take
pride of place in many collections. I have purposely refrained from
writing a long review, as this fine book really speaks for itself!
